Why an MP Role Description

Our members of parliament (MPs), have a very important job – governing the country. We all have a vague idea what they do but do we really understand their job? Do candidates understand the job?

How can we know they are up to the job if we aren’t clear what we expect them to do? How do we know they are doing their job well if there are no criteria to assess them against?

We vote for them.To chose between the candidates it would be useful to know if they fit the role description.

Role and expectations

One thing is the role MPs might have.

Another thing, important in assessing candidates, is how well does the candidate match our expectations?

We have taken the role and turned it into a set of voter expectations.

Questions for candidates

From these expectations, we have crafted a set of questions for candidates.

1. How do you intend to genuinely involve us in defining what matters for us and engage us in various decision-making processes?
2. How will you provide feedback to us on how and what you've contributed to the public good?
3. How will you represent us differently to the current representative or, as the sitting member, what changes will you make if re-elected?
